First, everybody needs this stuff for weekly sketchbook exercises:
  Hardbound SKETCHBOOK (at least 8 ½” X 5 ½”) Okay, if you're feeling daunted by this, settle for a flip-the-page, wire-bound, softcover sketchbook the first time. Hard covers stand up to the abuse better, but the important thing is to get a sketchbook.
 small set of gouache paintsuch as Reeves or PEBEO
 drawing pencil & eraser
 black waterproof pen/markersuch as Pigma Micron 05 or Sharpie extra-fine
 UHUor other water-soluble “lipstick-style” glue stick
Next, everybody needs this stuff, no matter what sort of paint you're using:
 roll of masking tape½” or ¾” (usually not green low-tack)
 painting/support storagesuch as a portfolio or homemade cardboard folder
 paint storagesuch as a tackle box, tote or plastic grocery bag
Now, decide on the sort of paint you're going to use, and buy at least these colours:
 whitesuch as titanium white
 redsuch as cadmium red, napthol red, permanent rose or cadmium red hue
 bluesuch as phthalo blue, or ultramarine blue
 yellowsuch as cadmium yellow, or lemon yellow
 greensuch as sap green
 brownsuch as burnt umber
 blacksuch as ivory black
Painters in WATERCOLOURS need this stuff:
 pad or block of watercolour paper at least 20 pages, or tear down full-size sheets to manageable pieces
 palette with depressions for liquid paint
 soft-bristled brushesstart, perhaps, with a wash brush and a round (#6 to #8); don't buy sable until you've tried one (and learned how to care for a brush well)
Painters in GOUACHE need this stuff:
 pad or block of watercolour paper, or illustration board at least 20 pages, or cut down full-size sheets to manageable pieces
 flat palettesuch as Bienfang disposable wax paper palette, old china plate, or clean styrofoam produce trays from your groceries
 palette knivesat least one; plastic is fine
 soft-bristled & stiff-bristled brushesstart, perhaps, with a round (#6 to #8) and a flat or bright (#6 to #8)
Painters in ACRYLIC or water-mixable OIL need this stuff:
 Canvasette page or gessoed canvas or Masonite panels or MDF panels or canvas boardsenough for roughly 5 to 10 sheets/panels/projects
 flat palettesuch as Bienfang disposable wax paper palette, old china plate, or clean styrofoam produce trays from your groceries
 palette knivesat least one; plastic is fine

 watercolour pencils or vine charcoal for underdrawing
 eyedroppers, sponges, plant mister
 full-sized support for a special project
 more paint: orange (such as cadmium orange), purple (such as dioxazine purple), process magenta or permanent magenta, process cyan, process yellow, another red (such as alizarin crimson), another blue (such as cobalt blue hue), another yellow (such as arylimide yellow), Payne's gray, Naples yellow, raw sienna, burnt sienna
