Trompe l'oeil

Trompe l'oeil is a French expression meaning "to trick the eye." It refers to any image designed to be so persuasively illusionistic that the viewer is fooled into seeing something "real."

For example: Some of the buttons in this painting are real buttons, and some are painted.

There's a story of two artists in ancient Greece. Zeuxis was feeling pretty proud of himself; his picture was so realistic that birds flew into the room to peck at the painted grapes. He went over to check out the work of his competitor, Parnhasius. When he tried to draw back the curtain concealing the painting, he discovered that the curtain was the painting. That's trompe l'oeil.
