Triptych

A triptych is an artwork made in three pieces.

For example: The three paintings above may each be utterly self-sufficient, but they're intended to be displayed as a single piece of art. What's the difference? In this instance, putting together the three serves as an informal chemistry lesson for the painter (that's me), trying to memorize the difference between the three things.

Triptyches are common in liturgical art such as altarpieces. How convenient to use three panels to depict, for example, the Trinity. Another traditional triptych format hinges three panels together so the two narrow outer panels can close like shutters over the central panel. A similar book-folded object with just two panels would be a diptych.
