Sgraffito

Sgraffito is making marks by scratching into the layers of the surface. As an experiment, turn your brush over and scrape into the soft paint with the handle and see what the fuss is about. You get some marks you can't produce any other way. If you like that, try scouring into layers of dry paint with a knife or sandpaper.

For example: This painting was made in layers. There's dark blue and green underneath the gold topcoat. Scratching into the gold reveals the colours below.

The word "sgraffito" originates in Italian, and the technique is more widely used in ceramics (scratching away a layer of coloured slip to reveal the contrasting underbody) than in painting.
