Push & PullWhen artists evaluate their work in progress, they often decide that some part of the image needs to be emphasized more, or perhaps less. They use a variety of strategies to either "pull" that part forward visually for greater emphasis(such as paint it warmer, or more saturated), or to "push" it back more deeply into the pictorial space for less emphasis (such as paint it cooler or less saturated).
