ImprimaturaIn oil painting, it's a good idea to wipe the gessoed surface with a thin priming of oil paint. This priming coat is called an imprimatura.
The imprimatura soaks into the gesso a bit to prevent the gesso from sucking too much oil from the successive layers of paint (which creates peculiar dull patches in the paint film). Art & Text (C) Linda Carson 2002
