Imprimatura
In oil painting, it's a good idea to wipe the gessoed surface with a thin priming of oil paint. This priming coat is called an imprimatura.

For example: This oil painting is pretty much all imprimatura. It's created with such a thin layer of paint that the drawing underneath shows and becomes part of the image. |
The imprimatura soaks into the gesso a bit to prevent the gesso from sucking too much oil from the successive layers of paint (which creates peculiar dull patches in the paint film).
