Hue

"Hue" is the word artists use when anyone else might say "colour." Hue is just one of the qualities we use to describe colour concisely. The others are value and saturation (or intensity).

Yet another colour wheel

For example: Nobody gets out of painting classes without having to make at least one colour wheel diagram illustrating the relationships between the colours. Neighbours are analogous. Opposites are complementary.

The word "hue" on a paint label, however, is meant to alert you that the colour inside is not, for example, "cobalt blue" but "cobalt blue hue" instead. It's not made with cobalt blue pigment but with another pigment recipe as a substitute. Why? Perhaps because the true pigment is unavailable, or expensive, or not safe for general use. "Hue" is to the true colour as "chocolatey-flavoured" is to chocolate.
