Hard-edged painting

Some paintings—especially geometric, abstract and minimalist—call for crisp distinct edges on shapes. That's hard-edged painting. It's easier said than done, but the invention of masking tape pretty much made the career of Piet Mondrian possible.

For example: The rods in this gridded grove are painted "hard-edge."

If you look very closely at a hard-edge painting, you can see the raised ridges of paint where the masking tape formed a temporary dam.
