Drybrush

When paint is sparsely applied with an almost-dry brush, you get a textured broken colour effect that can be used to depict blur or subtle colour transitions.

For example: A brush loaded with paint gives you full coverage of the surface. (When you're painting window trim on your house, that's what you're aiming for.) A dry brush gives you imperfect coverage that reveals some of the colour of the layer beneath. The technique of drybrushing takes advantage of that imperfect coverage to create texture, variety, and broken colour effects.

Drybrushing can also be used to highlight texture, relief and sculpture. When a dry brush is laid almost flat on its side, the paint is captured only on the high points of the texture of the surface.
