Diptych

A diptych is an artwork made in two pieces.

Socket; acrylic on hardboard;
6 inches X 6 inches; Carson 2002 Plug; acrylic on hardboard;
6 inches X 6 inches; Carson 2002

For example: The two paintings above may each be utterly self-sufficient, but they're intended to be displayed as a single piece of art. What's the difference? Well, if you see the blue plug and the red socket separately, they're okay. But together they're Boy Meets Girl, and that tells a whole new story, doesn't it?

Why would you paint a diptych? There's practicality. If you want to make a painting bigger than the doorway of your studio, you might subdivide it and paint a diptych. And there's theme. You might want two images that just go together, like his-and-hers wedding portraits, or thematically-linked pictures to be displayed on either side of a fireplace, a doorway, or an altar.

There are other analogous names for multi-piece artwork, such as "triptych."
