Process Colours, or CMYK

Commercial printing uses a standard palette of four colours to create the full range of colour you see in books, magazines, posters and advertising today. Those four colours—cyan, magenta, yellow and black—are known as the process colours. You might think of them as the primary colours of commercial printing. This system of colours is also called CMYK (for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and blacK).

For example: The colours of the tumbling chopsticks (above) have been mixed entirely from three colours: cyan, magenta, and yellow.

Why does printing use different primary colours than painting? That's a good question if you've got the time for some gory technical details.
