ChiaroscuroChiaroscuro is the use of contrasting light and shadow in an image. The Italians gave us this useful art word, combining their words for "light" and "shade."
Carravagio was especially well-known for composing pictures with high-contrast lighting situations. There aren't many mid-tones in chiaroscuro, but there's lots of drama. Art & Text (C) Linda Carson 2002
