Chiaroscuro

Chiaroscuro is the use of contrasting light and shadow in an image. The Italians gave us this useful art word, combining their words for "light" and "shade."

For example: The use of a strong directional light source in the image (such as the hidden flashlight, above) is typical of chiaroscuro.

Carravagio was especially well-known for composing pictures with high-contrast lighting situations. There aren't many mid-tones in chiaroscuro, but there's lots of drama.
