Assemblage

Assemblage is artmaking by sticking together three-dimensional materials. Are you allowed to do that? As I like to say in the studio, "There are fewer rules than you think."

Undersea gardens; acrylic & mixed media on hardboard;
6 inches X 6 inches; Carson 2002

For example: In the assemblage (above), acrylic paint itself is used as an adhesive. I've used the paint to glue in bits of sponge, glitter, aluminum leaf and plastic. The image projects more than a centimeter above the panel.

The word assemblage is used more often in sculpture than in painting, but I couldn't resist including it in The Painting Lesson because it's analogous to the practice of collage.
