Alla Prima, or Au Premier Coup
Sometimes a painter doesn't want to draw, and layer, and plan. Sometimes you just want to throw down some paint and get it right the first time.

For example: The studio-scape (above) has the typical rough-and-ready look of an alla prima painting. The brushstrokes are obvious and there's just one layer of paint. |
The unaffected immediacy of direct spontaneous painting is so appealing that the Italians and the French both invented terms for it, alla prima and au premier coup.
