Alla Prima, or Au Premier Coup

Sometimes a painter doesn't want to draw, and layer, and plan. Sometimes you just want to throw down some paint and get it right the first time.

For example: The studio-scape (above) has the typical rough-and-ready look of an alla prima painting. The brushstrokes are obvious and there's just one layer of paint.

The unaffected immediacy of direct spontaneous painting is so appealing that the Italians and the French both invented terms for it, alla prima and au premier coup.
