Achromatic Grays

When you mix black and white together you get gray, an achromatic or "colourless" gray. These are clear neutral mixtures (as opposed to the murky "what the heck colour is that really?" mixtures called chromatic grays).

For example: The floating paint tube (above) is painted entirely in mixtures of black, white, and a commercially-manufactured Neutral Gray.

Of course, it's never that simple. Depending on what sort of white and black you use, you may find that your gray has a subtle tendency to look beige/taupe/brown. That's a "warm" gray. Or it might look a little gunmetal/mauve/blue: a "cool" gray.
