Other KW area art lessons
There aren't nearly enough cool places to take
art lessons in the KW region, but I've heard
some good things about these:
- The Kitchener Waterloo Art Gallery
- at the Centre in the Square, Kitchener,
has offered art talks for adults, lots of school programs, and
day camps for kids and teens.
It's in some sort of transition right now, so
you might learn more by calling (519) 579-5860.
- The Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery
- in Uptown Waterloo,
(519) 746-1882,
offers children's programs.
- The Homer-Watson Gallery
- deep in Kitchener,
748-4377,
offers a wide assortment of artist-led
classes for adults and kids year-round.
Heads-up, parents, they often have one-day
programs on PD days, too.
- Emily Bickell
- at the Globe Studios,
teaches traditional oil painting for adults
(and does some lovely work herself).
- The KOR gallery
- has closed.
- The Beckett School
- in downtown Kitchener,
(519) 578-3640,
has a new artist on staff launching kids classes.
- The Guelph School of Art
- is allied with the lovely Wyndham Art Supplies store in downtown Guelph.
Some of my students have spoken highly of their classes, and
you'll have a hard time getting through the store without finding some
new tool or material to fall in love with.
- The Macdonald Stewart Art Centre
- associated with the University of Guelph
usually offers days camps for kids over March break and summer vacation.
- The Art Gallery of Ontario
- in Toronto has great courses year-round, including art history discussions,
adult studio classes, ambitious portfolio development for teens, and
day camps for kids. The most amazing value is Family Sundays: included with
the price of gallery admission, your family can
visit the massive sunny studio and make art together, or have creative
fun in the Dr. Mariano Elia Hands On Centre.
The AGO is under renovation so it's especially important to call ahead
to confirm times and specifics
at (416) 979-6615. This is a real treat of a field trip.
- The Waterloo Community Arts Centre
- at the Button Factory on Regina Street in Uptown Waterloo
offers a community-friendly array of classes for adults and kids.
They have day camps in March and over the summer, and
their prices are very affordable, especially for WCAC members.
