Mr. Right & Other Storiesby Linda Carson"Clearly, sir, you have no idea what kind of a woman you are dealing with... I am a woman who is not afraid to make a scene." Mr. Right & Other Stories was the first play I ever wrote. It won a contest in the first round of mailings I did and has seen four productions so far... so I was pretty encouraged about playwriting. Mr. Right is a five-woman, sketch-based comedy with some bite. In 1989 it was the first Canadian script to win the Phoenix Theatre's Festival of Emerging American Theatre (FEAT) in Indianapolis, Indiana. It was produced there that same summer. Mr. Right & Other Stories interweaves a continuing story line about some close friends with a series of separate-but-related sketches that illuminate the characters and issues a little further. (Those in-between pieces are stand-alone bits, usually solo, and they make pretty good audition pieces.) For example, over cocktails Colleen reveals her conviction that she can accomplish anything with sheer sex appeal. But that scene is followed by the Goldilocks bit, which has a few things to say about sex (surprise!). After we see Ruth encourage a friend to be more assertive, stand up for herself more, there's a solo bit about a woman trying to get a table for one in a less-than-hospitable restaurant. And the first act ends with the promise that the whole cast will start the second act lined up in order by tit size. As promised, the second act opens with most of the boob stuff, including the bra shopping sketch. Of course, Linda Carson holds the copyright on this script and she'd be forced to take bold action if you used it without permission or claimed it as your own.
