FASSHarvard has "Hasty Pudding." Cambridge has "Footlights." The University of Waterloo has FASS, which originally stood for Faculty, Administration, Staff & Students. It's an annual musical comedy, a romp, a massive inside joke by/for/on the folks at UW. It's the oldest continuing tradition UW has. It can be awful. It can be self-important. It can be the funniest damned showcase for emerging talent onstage and at the typewriter that you ever did see. And I met my husband there. Like all university traditions, it was way better in the olden days when we were doing it and these kids nowadays just don't know how to write-a-joke/stay-up-late/have-a-good-time. Yeah, and what's with this music they're all listening to? Not like in my day. We had music that meant something. Dan Hill. Debbie Gibson. Meatloaf. You can find out more about FASS from the organization itself. And you can express lively personal opinions to me by emailing to lccarson@bigblackpig.com.
